National Director of Marketing and Communication

Lieutenant Colonel John Caldwell has served 25 years on active duty in the Marine Corps and has extensive experience leading communication organizations.  His service has included operational deployments to Kosovo and Iraq; an overseas assignment in Okinawa, Japan; and multiple stateside tours, including two within the Pentagon in Washington, DC – the latter involved leading the service headquarters’ news and social media operations.


He currently serves as the National Director of Marketing and Communication Strategy for the Marine Corps Recruiting Command – responsible for managing the Corps’ second largest services contract with J. Walter Thompson and ensuring program delivery of more than 20% of all new contracts annually via its awareness and lead generation programs; the development and implementation of objective-driven, research-based communication campaigns, strategies and tactics that effectively leverage the synchronized engagement potential of the entire organization; and posturing the program in support of long-term organizational success.


He has attended two Harvard Business School resident Executive Education Programs: Driving Digital Strategies and Strategic Marketing Management.  He is a graduate of the Marine Corps University’s resident Expeditionary Warfare School and Command and Staff College.  He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts from the University of South Carolina and a Master of Military Studies from Marine Corps University.
